How to Prepare for Pest Control Treatment in Dubai
Quick answer
Clear access to kitchens, bathrooms, under sinks and around beds, cover or remove food, pet bowls and fish tanks, and do not spray your own insecticide beforehand. Then follow the technician's re-entry and ventilation advice. The exact prep depends on the pest, so ask what is needed for yours.

The short checklist
Whatever the pest, preparation does three things: gives the technician access to the places pests hide, keeps food, people and pets away from product, and avoids anything that spoils the treatment. The checklist below covers every treatment; the sections after it add steps for each pest.
Before the visit
- Clear the area under kitchen and bathroom sinks, around the cooker and fridge, and along skirting boards.
- Put food, pet food and utensils in sealed containers or closed cupboards.
- Remove pet bowls and bedding; cover fish tanks and turn off air pumps if the technician says so.
- Take out the rubbish and clear drain covers you can lift.
- Do not spray, fog or bait the area yourself in the days before.
- Take photos of what you have seen, with dates, and note where.
- Arrange building access: lift booking, gate pass or a permit from management.
- Plan where children and pets will be, and where you will be if you need to leave.
After the visit
- Keep to the technician’s re-entry and ventilation times.
- Do not wipe, mop or wash treated areas for the period advised.
- Keep food sealed, bins out nightly, and note any activity.
- Keep follow-up appointments.
If you are unsure what your pest needs, message us before the visit; the technician can then tailor what you are asked to do.
Why preparation matters
Treatment targets where pests hide and travel, so if a cupboard is full or a sofa is against the wall, the technician cannot reach the gap. A blocked kitchen can mean a visit that treats half the job. Access is also a time issue: a technician who needs thirty minutes to empty and move things spends that time not treating. Clear, honest information also helps, because the choice of method depends on who lives there and what else is around.
Dubai adds a few practical layers. High-rise buildings often need a lift booking or a permit, and have rules about working hours. Gated villa communities may need a gate pass for the technician. Villas have outdoor areas that need to be accessible: side gates, garden edges, outdoor drains and the roof area where applicable. Sort these before the visit so the appointment is not wasted.
Room by room
Kitchen. The most important room for most treatments. Empty the cupboards under the sink and, if asked, the lower cabinets. Store food and utensils away. Pull the cooker and fridge slightly out only if you can do so safely; if not, say so. Clean up crumbs and grease afterwards rather than before, if you have been told treated spots should not be wiped.
Bathrooms. Clear the vanity cupboard, lift out mats and put toiletries away. Floor drains should be uncovered if you can lift them.
Bedrooms. Strip the beds, clear bedside tables and the floor around the bed. For bed bugs, follow the specific steps below.
Living areas. Clear the floor along walls, and move small items off shelves near skirting boards if asked. Cover aquariums.
Balconies and outdoor areas. Clear the balcony floor, uncover drains, put away planters if asked. In villas, ensure gates are unlocked and pets are inside.
Store rooms and maid’s rooms. Clutter and cardboard make good hiding places. If boxes are stacked against walls, moving them out of the way will help; if stored items are no longer needed, junk removal can clear them.
Extra steps by pest
Cockroaches. Empty the sink cupboard and clear the area behind and beside the cooker. Remove cardboard boxes. Fix any visible leak, since moisture sustains them. Afterwards, avoid wiping gel spots and keep bins sealed. More on this pest is on our cockroach control page.
Ants. Put sweet and oily foods in sealed containers, wipe away trails only after the technician has seen them and note where the trail starts and ends. Do not block the trail with spray, since the technician uses it to find the nest.
Bed bugs. This one needs the most preparation. Strip the bed, bag linen without shaking it, wash at the hottest setting the fabric allows and tumble dry on high heat; keep clean items sealed until treatment is finished. Bag clothes and soft toys near the bed the same way. Empty bedside drawers into bags. Do not move furniture to another room or sleep on the sofa. Do not throw the mattress out before treatment. See bed bug treatment in Dubai for what the visit involves.
Rodents. Store all food, including pet food and bird seed, in sealed hard containers. Clear access to ceiling hatches, behind the fridge and under kitchen units. Pets need extra attention, because bait and traps must be placed out of reach, so tell the technician what pets you have.
Termites. Do not remove mud tubes or damaged timber before inspection. Move cardboard and paper stored against walls, switch off irrigation along the affected wall until the visit and take dated photos. Villa gates and garden access need to be open. Read more at termite control in Dubai.
Flies and mosquitoes. Empty standing water, including planter saucers, buckets and tray water, and cover bins. Treatment works best alongside source removal.
Pets, children and food
Pet and child safety comes down to separation and timing. Keep pets and children in another room or away from the home during treatment, and until the area has dried and been aired. Remove pet bowls, bedding, toys and chew items from the treated area. Cover or relocate fish tanks, and ask what to do about birds and reptiles, which can be sensitive to treatment. Tell the technician if anyone in the household is pregnant, elderly or has asthma or allergies; the product or method may change.
For food, store open food away or in sealed containers, remove utensils, and wash anything left uncovered in a treated area. Do not leave food on counters being treated.
If you want to read the product’s safety information, ask the technician for the product name and look for the manufacturer’s safety data sheet.
On the day
Be home or arrange access for the agreed window, and have building and gate permissions sorted. Walk the technician through where you have seen activity and show your photos, including anything you noticed late at night. Say what you have already tried, including any spray, and when. Before the technician starts, confirm the scope, the method, the re-entry time and the follow-up date. If anything in the plan surprises you, ask before treatment starts rather than afterwards.
Common mistakes
- Spraying first. It disperses pests and hides where the activity is.
- Deep cleaning right before. Wet surfaces and strong cleaning products can reduce how well some treatments work.
- Moving infested furniture. For bed bugs, it spreads the problem.
- Forgetting the balcony and outdoor drains. These are common routes into the home.
- Not telling the technician about pets or health conditions.
- Wiping treated spots too soon. It removes the product.
- Skipping the follow-up because things look better.

Frequently asked questions
- Do I need to clean the house before pest control?
- Tidy, but do not deep clean right before the visit. Clear surfaces and floors so the technician can reach skirting boards and cabinets, and put food away. Avoid mopping or wiping treated areas afterwards for the period advised. Heavy cleaning with strong products just before treatment can reduce how well some products work.
- Should I spray my own insecticide before the technician comes?
- No. Shop sprays can scatter pests, hide where activity is concentrated and affect the products the technician can safely use. Leave the area as it is, and take photos of what you see. If you already sprayed, tell the technician which product and when, so the method is chosen accordingly.
- What should I do with food and cooking items?
- Put food in sealed containers or closed cupboards and cover or remove utensils and cookware from areas to be treated. Take out the bin. If you cannot cover something, wash it afterwards. Ask the technician which cupboards will be treated, since gel treatments often go inside cabinet edges and hinges.
- Can pets and children stay at home during treatment?
- Keep them out of the area being treated, and away from the home if the technician advises it. Remove pet bowls and bedding, cover fish tanks and turn off air pumps if told to, and keep pets and children out until the product has dried and the room is aired. Birds and reptiles may need to be relocated, so ask first.
- How long do I stay out after treatment?
- It depends on the method and product, so ask the technician for the exact time. Gel and spot treatments may need little or no time away, while sprays and fogging usually mean several hours out followed by ventilation. Follow the instruction for your treatment rather than a general rule.
- Do I need to move furniture?
- Pull furniture a little from walls and clear the area under sinks, around the cooker and around beds, so the technician can reach skirting boards and gaps. Do not move infested furniture between rooms for bed bugs, because that can spread them. If something is heavy or fragile, ask before moving it.
- What should I do in the days after treatment?
- Do not wipe or mop treated spots for the period advised, keep food sealed, take bins out nightly and keep monitoring. Some activity may continue briefly. Note what you see and when, and keep follow-up appointments, since a quiet few days is not proof the problem has gone.
