An electrician in Dubai is called for two kinds of problem: faults that stop something working, and faults that are quietly unsafe. Plenty of the first can wait for a booked slot. The second cannot. This page helps you tell which is which, what to send so the right person is sent first time, and where the limits of a home repair sit. We coordinate partner electricians; we do not do the work ourselves.

## Is it urgent? Decide before you message

**Switch off at the board if you can reach it safely, keep clear, and treat as urgent when you see:**

- sparking, smoke or visible scorching on a socket, switch or board;
- a burning or fishy smell near an outlet or the distribution board;
- exposed copper, especially where children or pets can reach;
- a breaker that will not reset, or resets and trips straight away;
- water on or near a fitting: a leak above a light, a flooded floor near sockets, water in the board;
- a tingle or mild shock from a tap, a metal casing or an appliance.

If there is fire, smoke filling a room or anyone has had a shock, call the emergency services first. Do not touch wet equipment.

**Fine for a scheduled visit** when nothing above applies: one dead socket with no heat or smell, a light fitting or fan that needs replacing, a dimmer that no longer dims, a doorbell that has gone silent, extra sockets or outdoor lighting.

We do not offer a fixed response time. Urgent faults go to the earliest available partner electrician, and we tell you the window before anyone travels.

## What to send on WhatsApp

You get a faster and more accurate quote if the first message contains:

- a photo of the open distribution board (do not touch anything; just open the cover door), showing which breakers are down;
- a short video or photo of the symptom;
- what trips, and what was running: AC, water heater, oven, washing machine;
- the area, building or community, and whether it is a villa or an apartment;
- anything that changed recently: a new appliance, water leak, renovation, power cut.

Never open a socket, remove a faceplate or work inside the board to take a better picture.

## Breakers, RCDs and tripping circuits

The distribution board (DB) holds the breakers that protect each circuit, and usually an earth-leakage device (often called an RCD or ELCB) that cuts power when current leaks to earth.

- **A breaker that trips under load**, for example when the AC and kettle run together, usually means an overloaded or partly failed circuit.
- **An earth-leakage device that trips with nothing obviously running** is commonly caused by moisture or damaged insulation somewhere on its circuit: a water heater element, an outdoor fitting, a wet junction box.
- **A breaker that trips immediately on reset** points to a short or a hard fault, and should be left off.
- **A breaker or board that is warm to touch, discoloured or smells** needs an electrician now, not after the weekend.

A rule worth remembering: reset once and watch it. Trip twice, leave it off. For more on why breakers drop when the AC starts and what you can check yourself, see our guide to [common electrical faults in Dubai villas](https://dubaiservicehub.com/guides/common-electrical-faults-in-dubai-villas-and-when-to-call-an-electrician/).

## Common electrician jobs in Dubai homes

**Wiring faults and fault-finding.** Intermittent power loss, buzzing sockets or a breaker that will not hold. The electrician tests rather than guesses, tracing the fault to a damaged cable, loose connection or overloaded circuit, and tests again before leaving.

**Sockets and switches.** A socket that is warm, scorched or works only at an angle, a switch that crackles or feels stiff. Scorching or crackling usually means a loose terminal that has been arcing, so the cable behind the fitting should be checked too.

**Lighting and fans.** Replacing ceiling fixtures, installing downlights, fixing pendants, fitting ceiling fans and replacing old fittings with LED. A fixture that keeps blowing lamps or a downlight that flickers after a new lamp usually has a connection or driver problem, and dimmers need to be compatible with LED loads.

**Distribution board work.** Replacing a failed breaker or earth-leakage device, tidying a board, identifying which circuit is overloaded. A board that was fitted before the household added AC, a second kitchen or a converted outdoor area may simply be undersized for today's load.

**Water heater and appliance circuits.** Tripping on a water heater or oven circuit is one of the commonest villa callouts. The electrician isolates the appliance to find out whether the fault is the appliance or the circuit.

**Outdoor and garden circuits.** Gate motors, pathway lights, terrace sockets and boundary lighting live in heat, dust and occasional water, so corrosion and moisture ingress are the usual causes.

## What needs authority or building approval

Repairs to existing fittings are the straightforward end. The following are not DIY work, and some may need permission beyond the electrician:

- new circuits, a new or replacement distribution board, or changes to the incoming supply;
- added load: a pool pump, an EV charger, a large AC addition, an extra kitchen;
- anything on or near the meter or the supply cable;
- electrics around pools and water features, which have particular earthing and separation requirements.

In Dubai the supply side belongs to the utility, and changes to load or supply can need utility or building approval. Rules and procedures change, so we do not quote them here; ask the electrician which approvals the job needs, ask for that in writing before work starts, and ask your building or community management whether a permit is required. Ask the electrician to show their current authority registration before work starts. We do not claim any approval or licence on behalf of Dubai Service Hub or a partner.

If the electrical job is really a small fitting or fixing task, such as hanging a light or a shelf with no new wiring, a [handyman](https://dubaiservicehub.com/maintenance/handyman/) is usually the better fit. If the breaker trips only when the AC starts, an [AC repair](https://dubaiservicehub.com/maintenance/ac-repair/) check of the unit is worth requesting alongside the electrical check.

## Utility side or your side?

A villa supply has a utility side and a private side, and the meter is the dividing line. A fault upstream of the meter is the utility's to fix. If the street or the neighbouring villas have lost power, report it to the utility. If power reaches the meter but your board is dead, warm or tripping, it is an electrician's job. When you are unsure, describe what the board is doing when you message; a partner electrician who finds the fault is upstream should tell you early rather than charge you to fix what was never yours.

## Villa and apartment differences

**Villas** have their own main board, often with sub-boards for floors or outbuildings, plus outdoor circuits exposed to heat and dust. Wiring is often extended over the years, so tracing a fault can involve more of the property. Gated communities may need a contractor pass; tell us the community when you book.

**Apartments** are mostly within the unit: one board, a handful of circuits. The complications are access (booking security or the management office) and shared infrastructure such as the riser or the meter room. If a fault sits there, the electrician identifies it on the visit and the right party, usually building management, takes it on.

## Why not do it yourself?

Electrical faults carry a risk of shock and fire. A connection that looks fine but is slightly loose can heat up for weeks. A professional arrives with a tester to prove a circuit is dead before touching it, knows the local wiring conventions and often spots the related fault a quick fix would miss. If you rent, a DIY repair can also complicate the landlord conversation about who is responsible.

## What affects the price

We do not publish a fixed price, because it depends on the fault, the board and how far the electrician has to trace it. The things that move a quote are: how long diagnosis takes, whether parts are carried or ordered, access (floors, lifts, gate passes), whether work is on the utility side or inside the home, and whether the job needs a survey first. A price quoted before anyone has seen the problem is a guess; photos make it a better one, and we confirm the figure before anyone travels.

## What to expect during a visit

1. **Diagnosis.** Questions first, then a visual check of the relevant fittings and board, then testing to narrow down the circuit and the point of failure.
2. **Repair or replacement.** The electrician explains what was found. Common repairs (a socket, a switch, a breaker, a short section of cable, a light fitting) are usually done on the visit if the part is carried. If the job is larger than expected, you agree the scope before work continues.
3. **Check and summary.** The circuit is tested again under load, anything disturbed is put back, and you get a plain-language summary of what was wrong and what to watch.

## What is not included

This service is for repairs, replacements and fault-finding in an existing installation. Major rewiring, a new board, extra load or work on the supply needs a survey, a written scope and sometimes an approval, and is quoted separately. Faults on the utility side are not billed to you. Appliance repair beyond the electrical connection is a separate trade.

If your electrical issue is part of a wider run of villa repairs, a [villa maintenance AMC](https://dubaiservicehub.com/maintenance/villa-maintenance/) may be cheaper than separate callouts, and persistent AC-related tripping is worth checking with [AC maintenance](https://dubaiservicehub.com/maintenance/ac-maintenance/) as well.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I find an electrician in Dubai for an urgent fault?

Message us on WhatsApp with what you are seeing, a photo of the distribution board and your area. We coordinate the earliest available partner electrician and tell you the window before anyone travels. If there is smoke, a flame, sparking or water near live fittings, switch off at the board if it is safe to reach it, keep clear and call the emergency services first.

### Is it safe to keep resetting a breaker that trips?

Resetting once is normal, because a short overload can trip it. If it trips again at once, or repeatedly over a few days, stop resetting it. The breaker is protecting the circuit from a fault, and forcing it back on can overheat a cable or a loose connection. Leave that circuit off and have an electrician trace the cause.

### What should I send before the electrician comes?

A short video or photo of the symptom, a photo of the open distribution board showing the breaker positions, the area and building type, and which rooms are affected. Say what trips, when it trips, and whether it happens with the AC, a water heater or a kitchen appliance running. Do not open sockets or the board yourself to take the photo.

### What electrical work needs the right authority or building approval?

Anything beyond a repair to existing fittings: new circuits, board replacement, extra load for a pool, an EV charger or a big AC addition, and anything touching the meter or the supply. In Dubai the supply side belongs to the utility, and changes to load or supply can need DEWA or building approval. Ask the electrician to show their current authority registration and to tell you in writing what permissions the job needs before starting.

### Can the electrician fix a fault on the utility side of the meter?

No, a fault upstream of your meter belongs to the utility, and a partner electrician will tell you so rather than bill you for it. If neighbouring villas or flats have lost power too, report it to the utility. If power reaches your meter but your board is dead, warm or tripping, it is your electrician's job.

### Do you work in apartments as well as villas?

Yes, the partner electricians we send attend both. In apartments the work is usually inside the unit's own circuits, and the building may need to be told about access or about a fault in the riser or meter room. In villas it covers the main board, sub-boards, outdoor and garden circuits and multi-floor wiring. Tell us the building and community so a gate or contractor pass can be arranged.

### Is the first visit a repair or only a diagnosis?

The first visit is diagnosis and, where the cause is simple and the part is carried, repair in the same visit. Where a part has to be ordered or the job is larger than expected, the electrician explains the scope and you agree it before work continues. A price given with no information about the fault is a guess, which is why we ask for photos first.

### Will a repeat fault be re-checked?

Ask the partner electrician about their return-visit terms when you confirm the quote. A fault that returns often has a second cause upstream, such as a deteriorating cable or a damp junction box, so the second visit should trace beyond the point of the first repair rather than repeat it.
